Good day to all:
My name is Alisha Rivera and I am a twenty-one year old prospective pharmacy student. I regret not being able to be among you today for I live in North Carolina.
Nothing makes me more proud than knowing that I am Puerto Rican and this is why it is such an honor to be recognized as a Puerto Rican worthy of receiving this award. I would like to thank PRUMA and everyone who contributes to PRUMA for supporting Puerto Rican students who, like myself, would otherwise find it very difficult to attend college.
Once again, thank you PRUMA for the opportunity you have given me and may you all have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Alisha Rivera

Scholarship Committee:
I would like to thank PRUMA for their continued support throughout my college experience. I also thank WRPRC (Western Region Puerto Rican Council) for their collaboration in these awards. Your two groups have helped me with costs of books and other needed material to maintain good standings within my courses. I am honored that you have taken an interest in my goals and have allowed me to further my education through the Ramon Berrios Scholarship. I am very grateful and know that you will continue to have a positive impact on the lives of my fellow Puerto Rican peers.
Thanks again,
Robert Gainer III

Dear PRUMA Scholarship Committee,
I want to thank you for awarding me the Ramon Berrios Scholarship. I regret that I cannot accept this in person, but I am already in Los Angeles at the University of Southern California. I am so proud to be able to call myself a Puerto Rican and am honored to have been chosen by PRUMA to receive this award.
As a business major at USC, I can tell you that you are helping me to pay for a wonderful education and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I am so grateful that I can put this scholarship towards some of my expenses this year. I appreciate your kindness, and I will represent my Puerto Rican heritage to the best of my ability.
Again, my sincere regrets for not being able to be there today. Thank you, PRUMA.

Dear Scholarship Selection Committee & PRUMA Members,
I would like to thank the PRUMA scholarship committee so much for selecting me as the recipient of the Thelma Quinones scholarship this year. I would also like to thank the WRPRC for hosting such a wonderful scholarship awards ceremony. This scholarship will help me to continue pursuing my dreams of graduating from the University of San Francisco with my Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a minor in Neuroscience and continuing on to graduate school to major in Cross Cultural Psychology and Neuroscience. With this knowledge, I hope to one day be a resource for young Puerto Rican students who also dream of attending college and bringing pride to their families. I am so fortunate to be a scholarship recipient, proud to be a member of PRUMA, and extremely honored to serve as Miss PRUMA 2009. Being involved with PRUMA has brought me nothing but joy and pride in a culture that is so beautiful and unique. I have received nothing but support and love from PRUMA and this year I will carry the Miss PRUMA crown with pride and be the best possible representative that I can be. It is organizations like the Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid and the Western Region Puerto Rican Council that make me proud to be Puerto Rican. These organizations not only assist Puerto Rican students in achieving their dreams but perpetuate the understanding that each individual step we take is an advancement for our culture as a whole. Thank you to the WRPRC, PRUMA, and all of it's members for believing in me and wanting me to succeed.
All My Love,
Leticia Pagan

I am honored to be one of the recipients of the Ramon Berrios Scholarship. Due to your generous support I am the first girl of my family to attend a prestigious University. Growing up I have learned the importance of a college education, and I intend to have a great academic career at San Jose State University. Thank you to all of the P.R.U.M.A members and supporters for donating and raising funds for the scholarship program. I also want to thank my great grandma Nellie Hernandez, for informing me about this Scholarship, and the rest of my family for supporting me. My dream of being in the medical field is steadily becoming a reality, and I’m truly grateful for your help. Thank you again, and God bless.

I want to thank Pruma and the Western region again for the absolutely wonderful time I had at the Scholarship Banquet. Thank you Titi Tata for telling me about this opportunity; not only was I honored to receive
the George Acia Scholarship, I also had a great time eating, dancing, and meeting new people that I will remember forever. It was one of those times I felt so proud to be Puerto Rican.
The person I am most proud of is my mother. She immigrated to the U.S.from Penuelas, Puerto Rico, and only made it to the 6th grade, working her entire life in factories and fields. Yet she was able to raise me, with all the love in the world, and has never made me feel poor, unsupported,
unloved. It is because of her that I am where I am today.
I plan to finish my undergraduate degree, and continue to graduate school in order to become a professor at a college or university. This would be my way of giving back to those institutions which have given me so many
opportunities.
I am lucky to have been able to accomplish all I have thus far. I was able to travel to Florida with the American Cancer Society. Compete with some of California’s top schools on issues relating to the constitution with
the We The People Team. I am a loyal member of the Red Cross, UCI chapter. And have gone to Sacramento to lobby for more funds for higher education. Right now, I am Manager of Transfers and Retention at the Social Science
Academic Resource center at my school. It is my job to help undergraduate students pursue and be successful in post-baccalaureate endeavors.
Thank you again,
Esmeralda Hernandez

CONGRATULATIONS to these Years 2009 PRUMA Award Recipients!!! We received 12 applications and were able to give an award to each deserving student. This is our 1st year to award the George Acia Award & 2nd year to award the Thelma Quinones Award.
Additionally, our partner in this yearly event--WRPRC (Western Region Puerto Rican Council) continues to assist our endeavors to promote and discover our fellow Puerto Ricans obtaining a higher education by attending college, with the WRPRC Match. This aids PRUMA in our mission statement which is to "Advance with Progress".
An award was also given to the great-grandson of Ramon Berrios. PRUMA gives this scholarship in his memory and honor, giving back to our Puerto Rican culture and education, through the Ramon Berrios Scholarship, appropriately named.

I wish to thank the Board Members who participated in the application process for their time and dedication in screening all our students, as well as, Tony Pagan--PRUMA Scholarship Co-chair, for completing the final details in this year’s award process.
Anita Valteau was very beneficial in completing last minute details, obtaining signatures where needed, purchasing material for the certificates/frames, and handling ticket purchases which freed Natividad so she could concentrate on catering at the Luncheon.
Thank you all for your teamwork and support, allowing us to advance with progress.
Patricia Mercado--PRUMA Scholarship Chair
