Who is PRUMA? Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid, Inc. was organized in May 1937 and incorporated July 7, 1937. Our motto is to "Advance with Progress". The Association was founded by a group of Puerto Ricans who came from Hawaii to the East Bay and wanted to create a benevolent organization to further their people. The purpose for the Association is to help other Puerto Ricans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We bring the Puerto Rican community together keeping the culture alive through our Jibaro music and Puerto Rican food. It’s a new year. Happy New Year to all members and guests. For those that don’t know me I am Carlos Alberto Feliciano. I was born 1944 in el Barrio Barrial de Penuelas Puerto Rico.

I have been in California since 1955. I graduated from high school in June of 1964. I was employed for General Motors & NUMMI for 38 years. I have been retired now for 4 years. I have been married twice and divorced twice. I have 3 boys and 1 girl, and 1 grandson. I have three sisters and one brother. In the last ten years, we have lost both parents and one brother.

My first boy is working for NUMMI, my daughter has a degree in computer technology and working for Kaiser Hospital. My third child graduated from Irvine College with a degree in criminology and is working as a special agent for Homeland Security. He is also doing work with the FBI in San Diego, CA. My youngest boy graduated from New Haven Connecticut with a degree in fire science and is working for the Sacramento Fire Department. His live in girlfriend is a lawyer in Sacramento. As for me, I now spend a lot of time with Jennifer Rivera who is my girlfriend.

As some of you know I was president of this club for 3 years from 2000-2002. Since then we have had some changes. The bylaws were changed and other changes were made too. As your president this time around I am better prepared to do a good job for you. I know it’s impossible to please everyone but if I can please at least 80% of the members then I know we are going to move forward in progress

Carlos Feliciano- 2010 PRUMA President

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear PRUMA Family,

Happy New Year to all! All the Christmas activities here at PRUMA were memorable and enjoyed by all.I would like to share with you, my friends some memories I have from the Ramirez side of my family. I remember the Ramirez women making tamales for the holidays. I have never had the opportunity to make pasteles but I think the concept is the same. There was a lot of talking going on during the preparation and the men were always around to sample when the tamales were done.

For as long as I can remember, my mother has been telling my cousins that “She is the favorite Aunt” and the kids say “Hello favorite Aunt Anita” I think she has all these people brain washed. I remember my Aunt Vera having to have a chaperone with her when she dated my Uncle Reynold. Thank you for taking me to the State Fair. I’ve never forgotten that day. I remember my aunts dancing to American Bandstand and one of them being odd woman out and having to dance with the broom.

I can still remember my Grandparents taking me to Swan’s in Oakland, the Pink Elephant in San Jose and on Mission Blvd in Hayward was the Big Top.I remember my father putting Sammy and me in the car. Sammy was a baby and needed his diaper changed. He drove to my aunt’s house, picked her up brought her home, she changed the diaper then we all got back in the car to take her home.

I have my uncles who would do anything for me. In fact, they still do. They have a special place in my heart and I will be forever grateful for the compassion they showed us when my brother passed away. My Uncle Pete would not call and tell us that Sammy had passed so he called my Uncle Jess to come over and give us the news. I don’t know if I would have had the courage to do that.

I remember on a hot summer day. I was about 11 years old, my grandparents got me up early. We had a job to do. They followed the crops, cherries, prunes, strawberries, lettuce, etc. I went with them to cut apricots. (One of my favorite fruits.) We were paid by the tray. I cut the apricot in half. One went on the tray, one went in my mouth. I was sick by lunch time. My grandfather wanted me to know how hard it was to work the crops and it was a lesson I have always remembered. My Grandmother’s side (The Gallardo’s) we have reunions every so often. There we share stories with the next generation. We try to keep the memories alive.

With warm wishes,

Yolanda
