Who is PRUMA? Puerto Rican Union of Mutual Aid, Inc. was organized in May 1937 and incorporated July 7, 1937. Our motto is to "Advance with Progress". The Association was founded by a group of Puerto Ricans who came from Hawaii to the East Bay and wanted to create a benevolent organization to further their people. The purpose for the Association is to help other Puerto Ricans in the San Francisco Bay Area. We bring the Puerto Rican community together keeping the culture alive through our Jíbaro music and Puerto Rican food. We hold regular dances and raise funds for educational scholarships and other community benefits. We are proud to have Mr. Tony Pagan as our current President. Contact: Tony Pagan at

A third of the year is now over and we started the year with a sprint! We started the year with a Super Bowl party, Valentines Dance, Easter Egg Hunt and a free seminar for all members and their guest on Wills, Trusts and Estates. In addition we have rented out the PRUMA Center more than %50 percent of the weekends in the first three months. Hall Rentals are up ! A special thank you to Rena Giel and Annie Morales for their work in renting our hall and Cindy Caraballo and her team for staffing the bar for the rentals. We have gotten a lot more interior improvements completed along with raising more money for scholarships all due to the reduction in the rental rates which has increased hall rentals.
When people work together great things are accomplished. I’d like to ask you, what makes you proud of your club? Is it supporting education and community service through pageants and other fund raisers? Is it the functions that we host at the Center or the ones that we support through the Puerto Rican Community? I’d really like to hear from you. What would you like to see us do at PRUMA to make you proud? On Saturday May 10th, we will be hosting our annual Mother’s Day dance and Little Miss and Miss PRUMA contest. This is a great opportunity to show your support and come to the event but, more over this is our largest fund raiser and your supporting the girls by donating toward their ticket sales is very much appreciated. For only a $1 donation you can have a chance to win a $500.00 travel voucher to anywhere you wish to travel. Please be generous and purchase tickets from our beautiful, smart contestants. I look forward to seeing you at the event at the PRUMA Center.
Lastly, I want to say that I’m always willing to try something and if it doesn’t work I’ll admit that we need to try something else. We tried doing a newsletter every two months and that isn’t working so starting in May we will have a monthly newsletter again. It is more work doing a newsletter every two months than monthly. I want to thank Mildred Figueroa who stepped up to help with the production of the monthly newsletter. We have a great momentum started this year and I’d like to see us continue throughout the year and finish strong!

My name is Amanda Pagán, I am a 19 year old sophomore at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey CA. I am the daughter of Tony and Janet and the granddaughter of Moses and Marie Pagán. I am a fifth generation member of PRUMA, the great-great-great niece of Leopoldo, Raymond and Paul Pagán our founding Fathers.
My dream is to become Miss PRUMA for three reasons; first, knowing what an honor it would be to represent a club that my family has been a part of for so long. Second, becoming Miss PRUMA means that I will have raised a significant amount of money for the good of the club which will help with center improvements and scholarships. Lastly, I would like to become Miss PRUMA because since I was a little girl admiring the glass case with all the Miss PRUMA and little Miss PRUMA pictures in it; I have wanted to join the photo gallery so that one day my future daughter and possibly her daughter will know that I contributed to the Puerto Rican community.
What it means to me to be Puerto Rican is the smile and sense of pride I get when I see someone driving with our flag hanging from the rear view mirror, that uncontrollable foot tap and hip sway as soon as the music comes on (even in the middle of a department store) and that you never get tired of the hugs and cheek kisses and the warm feeling and sense of family at every Puerto Rican event.
My goals for the future are to get a college degree, continue working as a nanny and Sunday school teacher and finding my way into a career working with children.
As a 19 year old this is my last opportunity to run for Miss PRUMA and I appreciate the opportunity and your support.

A Special Tribute!
We here at PRUMA want to honor a very special friend of the PRUMA family. Thelma Quinones has been a long time friend and supporter of PRUMA. Thelma has provided monetary gifts to PRUMA several times through out the year for years!
Thelma has provided a New Years cake for the PRUMA membership for several years and has just been a fantastic champion and supporter of PRUMA. Unfortunately, she lives in Antioch, CA and has not been able to attend PRUMA meetings or functions as much as she would like to.
The PRUMA Board would like to honor Thelma by creating a scholarship in her name. This year we will award one deserving student with the Thelma Quinones Scholarship Award to be given out at our Scholarship Banquet annually.
We want to thank Thelma for her ongoing support and want to wish her a happy belated 87th Birthday. We hope to see you soon! May God Bless and keep you.

College Youth Group!
If you are a college student or you have a college student or know of one we want to invite you to join our newest committee. This group will be putting on 4 youth functions this year to bring college aged kids together to explore their culture and meet other Latino kids and have a good time. They will organize a dance and maybe a bowling night or a day at an amusement park. If you are interested please contact Amanda Pagán at 925-828-3014. The youth are our future and we want you to be a part of a very exciting time for us all!
